DOYLEISM OF THE DAY: “There are things you can do in an instant that will give you heartache for life.”

I’ve done a lot of traveling in the last few years and have always prided myself that it doesn’t have very much negative impact on me. But this last trip to London for five days and back has knocked me to my knees. Talk about jet lag!  I’ve literally been in bed over half the time for the past six days. I feel like a truck has run over me. I’ve got all sorts of meetings the next few days so hopefully I’ll feel better soon. And I really look forward to the Super Bowl party every year with my friends. This will be an enjoyable event this year as I made a 100k bet on picking the winner of the championship game. I took the Colts and my opponent took the Patriots. I think I’ll bet 50k on the Saints +4 1/2 and lock up a nice win.  If Indy wins by 4 or less, I’ll win 150K. Nice position to be in huh?

I don’t have much to look forward to after the Super Bowl. The next day I go into a 5 1/2 hour surgery on my teeth and gums. That is going to require a lot of change in my schedule. I’m supposed to play in the Premier League tournament that is being filmed at the M Casino here in Vegas. It is the most widely watched TV show in Europe, with a $100,000 buy in. That would be great exposure for DoylesRoom but there is no way I’ll be 100% recovered from all that dental surgery so I’ll have to cancel.

Then, there is the WPT event at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles. That is one of my favorite tournaments because the side action is always good. Then the Celebrity tournament is right afterwards and is a fun time. I’ve got an invitation to play in a big Poker Stars TV tournament and immediately afterwards is the NBC Heads Up Championship. I’ll have to bow out of all these tournaments because there is no use playing unless you are at your best. The competition has gotten so good you need to feel good physically as well as mentally to have a chance to win.

My gut feeling is just chill out until the WSOP and try to have a big series. Could it be my age is finally catching up to me?

$15,000+400 seats now up for grabs for as little as $0.22 through DoylesRoom.com’s step series

San Jose, Costa Rica – September 14, 2009 – Whether you want to play with Doyle Brunson at the online tables or chat with the legend in one of the biggest WPT tournaments, DoylesRoom.com will make it happen. Players can win a seat in the Doyle Brunson 5 Diamond World Poker Classic through an exclusive steps. The WPT event takes place at Bellagio in Las Vegas from December 13-19, 2009.

Last year’s 5 Diamond World Poker Classic featured a $9.6 million prize pool. The winner of the tournament earned $2.4 million.

This year, poker players at DoylesRoom.com will be playing for much more than a $15,000+400 seat. Those who win a seat in the WPT tournament named in honor of Doyle Brunson will also win Doyle Brunson’s Vegas Experience and get to spend the weekend before the tournament living the dream on the Las Vegas strip with Doyle Brunson. The experience includes access to the hottest clubs, restaurants and bars, tickets to a show, dinner with Doyle and full VIP treatment.

Those who think that winning a $15,000+400 seat in a major WPT event would be an expensive undertaking are in for another surprise. From September 4 to December 4, 2009, DoylesRoom.com will be hosting step tournaments for as low as $0.22. A complete step schedule for the Doyle Brunson 5 Diamond World Poker Classic is available online at DoylesRoom.com.

DOYLISM OF THE DAY: “A bad decision is when you know what to do and you don’t do it.”

I guess I owe an explanation as to why I didn’t play in the WPT Championship at the Bellagio. It’s my favorite tournament of the year but i didn’t feel up to it.  No, I’m not sick, as evidenced by the fact I’ve been playing 10-12 hours a day in the cash games.  But after attending two funerals last week, along with my wife being out of town for six weeks, I just felt like I wouldn’t have the discipline or patience to sit through a long tournament.  At least in the cash games you can quit when you need to be somewhere else.

I never realized how much I depend on my wife to take care of the pets, run the house, pay the bills, keep food in the house, etc. Louise has allergy problems which led into asthma, which triggered a heart condition known as A-Fib. Her doctor told her she had to stay out of town until the pollen level subsides. I know there is lots of pollen in the air because I’ve been sneezing all month and I usually don’t have a problem. I sure hope Louise gets home soon.

I never expected to become part of the Twitter craze, but DoylesRoom started my page www.twitter.com/texdolly and now I’m posting on it.  I don’t think my old-fashioned cell phone will work so I have to do it from my computer each day.  What will they think of next!

I headed over to my CPA to get my taxes done and ran into a traffic jam.  Hundreds of people were blocking the streets having what they called a “tea party”.  I think they were protesting the current financial crisis our nation is going through, but some of the signs were ridiculous.  “Impeach Obama”, “What comes after trillions”, “Stop spending our money” and other statements blaming our president.  For Pete’s sake, let’s give the guy a chance to straighten this mess up.  I got a lot of heat for voting for McCain, but I knew when I cast a late vote, John didn’t have a chance to win. I was just being loyal to the Republican Party.  But now that the nation has spoken that they wanted Obama, we should all support him.

DOYLISM OF THE DAY: “The word listen contains the same letters as the word silent.”

It’s almost time to go to the Commerce for the WPT event.  I’m going to play in the $10K H.O.R.S.E. on the 16th of this month.  Matt Savage is responsible for adding this game and it was a brilliant move.  A lot of us wouldn’t be going this early but the H.O.R.S.E. will bring us.  I also think there will be lots of cash games.

I’m almost through Season 3 of the old miniseries, “Dallas”.  As I was watching J.R. Ewing in his role, I noticed his hat with a feather band around it.  About 10 years ago, Irwin Molansky, who produced Dallas, gave me that hat when he found out I was a fan of the show.  I think it is in my garage, I’m going to check it out.  It has been a couple of decades since Louise and I watched this series and she can’t believe I still remember what happened.  I guess it’s just a poker player’s memory.  It’s a really lazy time for me.  I can’t seem to get any enthusiasm for anything.  Besides watching Dallas, there are Oscar-winning movies on a movie channel and I’ve been watching the great “oldies” like, “An Officer and a Gentleman”, “The Bridge on the River Kwai”, “Gone With the Wind”, and the best of all, “The Godfather” trilogy.  I hate it when I get in a funk like this and I’ve got to snap out of it.  I need to start eating healthy and get out on the golf course.  The trouble with playing golf is I hurt for two or three days afterwards.  Nobody ever said getting old was for sissies.

ESPN called me and they are coming to my house to film.  They are doing a documentary on “Jimmy The Greek”, who I knew very well.  Jimmy Snyder was a columnist for the Las Vegas Sun back in the early 70’s.  He is the guy that stuck the “Texas Dolly” nickname on me because I was trying to avoid publicity.  Jimmy went on to become a national celebrity when he became the football analyst on CBS with Brent Musburger.  “The Greek” as we called him, was a unique guy and also endorsed my first Super System book.

The old group of poker players called the Texas Rounders is getting smaller and smaller.  David Baxter from Corpus Christi, Texas passed from a long illness.  He was instrumental in getting tournament poker started and he won several events before he retired back to Texas.  The only remaining player I can think of out of the professional players that brought Texas Hold’Em to Vegas, are Crandell Addington, Aubrey Day, James “Goody” Roy, Bobby Hoff and Carl McKelvey.  I miss those guys that have died and I remember and miss the great times we shared.

Michael Phelps is getting a lot of flak about his picture smoking dope.  It’s too bad, he is a nice kid but he has to realize his every move is scrutinized and he can’t make mistakes like that.  He has lost lots of money because he has lost some major endorsement deals.  I think Michael will get back on track.  Remember, he is a 23 year old kid.

DOYLISM OF THE DAY: “It’s choice, not chance, that determines our destiny.”

The most I had ever paid for a hamburger was $10, which I thought was foolish.  Yesterday, I went to Red Rock Casino to go to a movie with my pal Jack Binion.  We stopped in a gourmet hamburger place in the Red Rock and got a $14.75 burger.  It was a big restaurant but almost completely empty.  The way the economy is right now, this is going to be tough for them to survive.  The first thing people cut out is going out for lunch and dinner.  I personally would rather have a whopper from Burger King, anyway.

The election is finally over and I’m glad.  Martin Luther King said that someday, men would be judged by the content of their character, not by the color of their skin.  Looks like that day has come; with Obama being our first African-American president.  I voted for McCain because of some personal beliefs, but now that America has spoken, Obama is my president and I’ll support him in any way that I can.  I can only hope he will be able to turn our country around.  President Obama is one of the best speakers I’ve ever heard.

I get asked a lot where I get the Doylisms I use to start my blog.  A few of them are from me, but most of them are from things that I have read.  They come from all walks of life and from different folks.  I read a lot when I have time and I’ve taken the thoughts of a lot of authors, all the way from Will Rogers to Winston Churchill.  There is a lot of wisdom in books if we take the time to find it.

I didn’t go to Foxwoods for their WPT tournament.  Besides the fact I’m trying to stop traveling so much, my plate is so full now I don’t have any time.  I have to do a book signing at the Rio that I committed to and also have to appear in their “pro pit”.  The Hall of Fame induction is Sunday and I have to make the introduction speech for my pal Dewey Tomko.  I also have to do two shows for the Real Deal because most of their pros are out of town.  I’m also addressing some issues with Microgaming, DoylesRoom’s software provider.  Everything will work out, but it takes time and effort.

Daniel:  What do I do wrong?

Caddie: Sir, you spend so much time in bunkers, you get mail addressed to Hitler!
